Literature review of ESOL for learners with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. - 04/08/2004

This review was undertaken as part of NRDC’s work in support of experiences of adult learners who have learning difficulties and/or disabilities and who also need English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) provision. A range of theoretical, practical and research materials were collected and reviewed and a practitioner seminar held. Only very limited research has previously been undertaken in this field.

Assessing adult literacy and numeracy : a review of assessment instruments - 04/08/2004

NRDC needs valid, reliable and manageable assessment instruments for its own research and development programmes in support of Life such instruments. This report was therefore commissioned to provide a review of existing instruments for assessing adult literacy and numeracy. About 15 instruments were analysed. The overall conclusion was that none was fully suitable for NRDC’s research programme.

Systematic reviews of controlled trials relevant to adult literacy and numeracy, plus an ‘expert’ review, were undertaken by NRDC as part of its work in support of complementary answers to the question ‘What is known from research about effective pedagogy?’ The scoping and systematic reviews provide rigorously derived answers to the question ‘What factors in teaching cause adult learners to make progress in adult literacy and numeracy?’

The benefits to employers of raising workforce basic skills. - 04/08/2004

This review of the literature suggests that individuals benefit significantly from improving their levels of literacy and numeracy. The evidence on the benefits to employers of investing in basic skills training is very sparse, although some studies have indicated that such benefits may include increases in productivity, reductions in costs and enhanced customer satisfaction.

Developing adult reading skills:an exploration of text-, sentence-, and word-level reading difficulties - 04/08/2004

This exploratory study of adult learners’ difficulties with reading was carried out by NRDC as part of the Centre’s work in support of 53 learners were assessed, sessions in which they participated were observed, and tutors were interviewed. The findings showed a wide range of strategies being used to address reading difficulties, but less than a perfect match between learners’ difficulties and pedagogy.
